Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (Sometimes Happiness, Sometimes Sadness), also known by the initials K3G, is a 2001 Hindi-language family drama film written and directed by Karan Johar and produced by Yash Johar under his banner Dharma Productions. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor, Rani Mukerji and Johnny Lever in the lead roles. The film tells the story of an affluent Indian family that faces a rift when the elder son Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) marries a lower-class woman Anjali (Kajol) against his father's wishes. Years later, his younger brother Rohan (Hrithik Roshan) sets out to reunite the family and bring back the happiness that they once shared.

Plot Summary

The film begins with a flashback of Yashvardhan "Yash" Raichand (Amitabh Bachchan), a wealthy businessman, and his wife Nandini (Jaya Bachchan) adopting a young orphan named Rahul as their son. They also have a biological son named Rohan, who is much younger than Rahul. Yash and Nandini love both their sons equally and raise them with great care and affection. Rahul grows up to be a successful and charming man, while Rohan is a cheerful and playful boy.

Yash decides to arrange Rahul's marriage with his friend's daughter Naina (Rani Mukerji), who is also in love with Rahul. However, Rahul falls in love with Anjali Sharma (Kajol), a lively and spirited girl from a lower-middle-class family. Anjali has a younger sister named Pooja "Poo" Sharma (Kareena Kapoor), who is very fashionable and modern. Rahul and Anjali get married secretly with the help of Anjali's father Bauji (Alok Nath) and her friend Sayeeda (Farida Jalal). When Yash finds out about this, he is furious and disowns Rahul for marrying a girl of his choice. He also forbids Nandini and Rohan from having any contact with Rahul and Anjali.

Rahul and Anjali move to London, where they start a new life with Pooja, who joins them later. They have a son named Krish (Jibraan Khan), who is very close to his parents and aunt. Nandini misses Rahul terribly and hopes that he will return someday. Rohan grows up to be a handsome and smart young man, who is unaware of his brother's existence. He studies in a boarding school and returns home for his father's birthday.

On his birthday, Yash receives a letter from Rahul, which he burns without reading. Nandini secretly reads the letter and learns that Rahul has named his son after Yash's father Krishnaraj Raichand (Achala Sachdev), who is in a coma. She also sees a photo of Rahul's family and feels happy for him. She decides to tell Rohan the truth about his brother and asks him to bring him back home. Rohan agrees to do so and leaves for London without telling anyone.

In London, Rohan meets Pooja at a shopping mall and pretends to be in love with her to get close to her family. He also befriends Krish at his school and learns that he is Rahul's son. He then meets Rahul at his office and introduces himself as Yash's nephew. He also meets Anjali at their home and bonds with her. He tries to convince Rahul to forgive his father and return to India, but Rahul refuses to do so. He tells Rohan that he loves his father, but he cannot forget the pain and humiliation that he caused him and Anjali.

Rohan then devises a plan to reunite the family. He invites Yash and Nandini to London for his graduation ceremony and tells them that he has found a girl for himself. He also tells Rahul and Anjali that he has invited his parents to meet them. He hopes that by bringing them face to face, they will sort out their differences and reconcile. However, things do not go as planned, as Yash and Rahul have a heated argument and Yash walks out of the house. Nandini breaks down and begs Rahul to come back home with her. She also tells him that she is proud of him and his family.

Rahul is moved by his mother's words and decides to go back to India with her. He also apologizes to his father and asks for his forgiveness. Yash is touched by Rahul's gesture and hugs him. He also accepts Anjali as his daughter-in-law and welcomes her into the family. Rohan is overjoyed to see his family reunited and hugs his brother. Pooja reveals that she loves Rohan and wants to marry him. Rohan reciprocates her feelings and proposes to her. Yash and Nandini give their blessings to the couple.

The film ends with the entire family returning to India, where they are greeted by Krishnaraj, who has come out of his coma. They all celebrate Diwali together and light up the sky with fireworks.
